Counsel and Deputy Commissioner for Legal Affairs
Duties: Establish education policy and comply with the law. Counsel and Deputy Commissioner for Legal Affairs also serves on the Commissioner’s cabinet. Provides legal advice and services on litigation, legislation, rulemaking, and other matters involving the Department’s areas of responsibility including prekindergarten through grade 12 education, higher education, cultural institutions, adult and continuing education, the licensed professions, services for individuals with disabilities and the Department’s office of management services. Create and maintain relationships within the Department and will lead and manage the staff in the Office of Counsel to support the goals of the office and the Department’s mission.

Qualification and Experience

Candidate must have a JD Degree from a nationally accredited law school and 5 years of progressively responsible experience with complex legal issues in Education Law, including 2 years of leadership and/or management experience with a proven record of results and be admitted to the Bar to practice law in New York State.
