Associate General Counsel - Coverage
The candidate will provide coverage advice and act as a strategic partner to claims professionals in regard to coverage issues arising out of third-party liability coverages handled by various lines business. Will research coverage issues, provide opinions on coverage issues as necessary and assist in preparing and/or reviewing coverage position letters on an as needed basis. Provide legal advice on a variety of coverage issues arising out of claims being handled by the Claims department. Issue written coverage opinions. Provide assistance with the issuance of coverage position letters on an as needed basis. Review outside counsel's coverage opinions on an as requested basis. Review draft declaratory judgment actions being filed on coverage issues. Participate in strategic discussions on coverage matters on an as requested basis. Monitor case law on a variety of coverage issues and notify interested stakeholders of new developments. Provide training on coverage issues to the Claims Department. Review proposed policy wording on an as requested basis. Communicate with Underwriting partners regarding coverage issues. Prepare white papers on topics of interest (coverage related) as requested. Develop tools necessary to track advice requested, advice provided, coverage opinions issued and coverage rulings received. Develop work flow process for reviewing coverage issues, providing coverage advice and determining if outside coverage counsel should be retained. Prepare quarterly reports to Claims Management communicating key performance metrics, identifying action plans for training as needed, and identifying trends relating to coverage issues. Attend mediations or settlement conferences on behalf of the company.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have a J.D. degree and admission to practice law in at least one state. Must have 7+ years of recent coverage practice in a law firm or with an insurer with an emphasis on general liability and professional liability coverages. Experience with transportation, marine, and environmental liability policies and coverages preferred. Experience with error & omission liability policies and coverages desired. First chair at trial experience on coverage cases desired. Understanding of coverage issues/law in multiple jurisdictions is a must. Knowledge of CA, TX, LA, SC, FL, NY, NJ is preferred. Should have extensive working knowledge of both admitted and surplus lines General Liability and Error & Omission policies, including Excess/Umbrella policies.
