IP Paralegal - Operations and Practice Management The candidate will Provide overall management and mentoring of IP Department managers and staff including docketing, foreign filing, training, and records. Will develop, refine and implement best practices and process improvements to ensure quality work product and service is consistently provided and risk management is achieved. Collaborate with Finance and other departments to address IP specific issues related to systems, billing, collections, accounts payable, conflicts, etc. Stay current with USPTO rules and forms. Act as a liaison on various matters between IP section management and all attorneys and staff within the section. Assist IP section management with staff utilization, utilization analysis and statistical reporting. Serve as a resource to staff on confidential and other matters (provide counseling, dispense advice, solve problems as needed), and provide “HR†type functions for IP Operations staff. Assist with new hire integration of IP staff and paralegals. Prepare written communications on behalf of IP management. Follow up with appropriate attorneys regarding strategic initiatives and policies. Schedule key meetings and coordinate various IP functions. Coordinate or be involved in various practice group initiatives (sub-committees, group lunches, section meetings). Act as liaison with HR on all staff recruiting; participate in the interviewing process for all new IP staff and paralegals. Manage employee relations matters for paralegals and other IP staff including performance improvement and separation processes. Manage and conduct involuntary departures. Review all IP staff and paralegal evaluations, allocate merit/bonus dollars and conduct annual performance review meetings. Work with Training Committee and Human Resources on professional development programs. Provide guidance and direction to the Patent Paralegal Supervisor, IP File Room Supervisor, IP Docketing Manager, IP Training and Procedural Development Manager, and others as needed. Work with other administrative departments as needed to identify resources for the section and coordinate use of these resources. Provide guidance to office administrative managers as requested. Handle special projects as requested by IP section management.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have Bachelor’s degree. Should have 10+ years working experience, at least 7 years in a law firm setting, and 0-10 years of experience working within an Intellectual Property field. Working knowledge of docketing systems and patent prosecution procedures are needed. Experience with CPI and IPDAS preferred. Excellent judgment, strong written verbal communication skills and ability to communicate openly and confidently among all levels of the Firm.
