Staff Attorney The candidate will defend tenants in nonpayment and holdover eviction proceedings in Housing Court, bring Housing Part actions to remedy uninhabitable living conditions, provide counsel in administrative proceedings before various State and City agencies, Supreme Court actions, appellate litigation, impact litigation, and other affirmative litigation. Will also work with tenant groups and community-based organizations to conduct trainings and outreach, and prevent tenant displacement. Staff and conduct client intake; Perform legal research, draft legal memoranda, advocacy letters, and other legal documents; Litigate all phases of housing court cases and administrative proceedings, including negotiating and drafting stipulations, drafting pleadings and motions, conducting discovery, depositions, trials, and briefing and arguing appeals; Conduct outreach in communities where tenants’ rights are threatened, and train community and tenant groups on tenants’ rights; Maintain detailed records in a case management system. Should have admission to the New York State bar. Must have 1+ year of litigation experience, preferably experience representing tenants in New York City Civil Court, Housing Part. Fluency in Spanish, Russian, Haitian-Creole, or Bengali preferred; and Background in organizing or strong ties to NYC low-income communities preferred.
