Immigration Staff Attorney
The candidate will be responsible to assist the Immigration Regional Counsel in providing direct assistance to firm staff and volunteers in the provision of client services including training and technical assistance on immigration legal issues for staff, law clerks, and pro bono attorneys. Intake/case preparation including conducting intake interviews in the regional offices of Santa Clara County and San Mateo County to screen cases for eligibility for pro bono placement, requesting U visa certifications for those cases, and preparing memos for pro bono placement of the cases. Undertake casework on BayLegal immigration-related cases as necessary including managing an existing caseload and providing back-up on cases for staff or pro bono attorneys. Participate in county, regional, and/or statewide collaborations around the rights of and immigration relief available to survivors of interpersonal violence. Take part in media interviews related to immigrant rights, especially regarding the rights of and relief available to immigrant survivors of interpersonal violence.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must have minimum 2 years of relevant immigration. Legal experience is strongly preferred, in particular with U visa, VAWA relief, T visa, and SIJS. Additional desirable practice areas include: Adjustment of status, family-based petitions, naturalization, asylum, and removal defense. Significant clinical, internship, and/or fellowship experience is considered. Must be admitted to practice, with good standing, in at least one state (California preferred). Cultural competency in working with low-income clients from diverse backgrounds, including clients with physical and mental disabilities, LEP clients, LGBT clients, and clients who have experienced trauma are needed. Bilingual ability in Spanish or Vietnamese is preferred. Excellent communication, writing, and public speaking skills are must. Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively with a dynamic team are needed. Experience mentoring volunteer students and pro bono attorneys is a plus. Must have a deep understanding of the intersectional issues pertaining to immigrant survivors of interpersonal violence.
