ProfileParalegal/ Client Advocate The candidate will assist the 40+ public defenders on staff. Will provide litigation support for attorneys on a variety of projects. Preparing and writing submissions to the New York Board of Parole arguing for clients’ release from prison. Advocating for improvement of clients’ conditions while incarcerated, including medical and mental health treatment and claims of harassment. Providing dedicated support for firm’s Immigrant Justice Project, including case management, records intake, writing affidavits, and written advocacy on behalf of non-citizen clients. Interpreting conversations and translating written documents for attorneys and Spanish-speaking clients. Visiting clients in prisons across New York State. Assisting attorneys with drafting briefs seeking reductions in sentences. Providing litigation support. Should have: excellent organizational skills; strong written and oral communication competency; patience and persistence with bureaucracy; and the ability to empathize with and the desire to work on behalf of people who have been convicted of serious offenses. Fluency in Spanish is required. A bachelor’s degree or its equivalent is necessary. Starting date: July 2018.
