The mission of our Criminal Division is to enhance public safety and to achieve justice through the effective prosecution of municipal offenses. **This posting will remain open until a sufficient pool of qualified applicants are obtained; however, it is subject to close at any time without prior notice.** PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the direction of the City Attorney, investigates facts, researches law, and prepares documents to assist lawyers in the Criminal Justice Division of the City Attorney's Office. Researches legal issues and prepares memos Utilizes Colorado Bureau of Investigations software (NCIC/CCIC & DMV searches) Prepares Domestic Violence case files with necessary documents for prosecutors to use in court proceedings Assists at court trials and hearings Communicates with attorneys, citizens, court personnel, law enforcement personnel, outside agencies/personnel, support staff, and witnesses on a daily basis Conducts investigations in relation to cases Interviews witnesses Prepares correspondence Drafts legal documents Compiles exhibit notebooks as needed Orders and obtains various documents for attorneys Files documents electronically as needed Performs additional duties as assigned, including administrative duties (i.e. answering phones) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: Associates Degree in Paralegal studies, or related field Experience: Work experience or internship in a legal office is highly preferred At least 2 years of responsible legal office experience and/or paralegal experience An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Knowledge: Knowledge of general office procedures Knowledge of Legal terminology Knowledge of Legal forms Demonstrated knowledge of legal research and writing Abilities: Must be able to start at 6:00 a.m. every morning in order to prepare that morning's court cases Ability to establish and maintain professional and effective working relationships with attorneys, citizens, court personnel, law enforcement personnel, outside agencies/personnel, support staff, and witnesses. Handle confidential and sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy Communicate effectively both orally and in writing Multi-task and prioritize work in a fast-paced, high volume environment Skills: Skilled in the use of personal computers including related software, i.e. Microsoft Office (Excel, Word), Lexis, and/or Westlaw Typing 45wpm preferred Licenses and/or Certificates Required: Paralegal certification, preferred WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Demands: Primarily sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 10 pounds; expected to walk to court for trials, hearings and for transportation of court files; occasional lifting, carrying, and standing Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate office equipment Vision sufficient to read computer screens, reports, and related department documents Dexterity to operate computer keyboards and other related office equipment Endurance sufficient to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain morning's with employees and citizens Work Environment: Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment Equipment Used: Frequently uses standard office equipment including typewriters, computers, calculators and copy/fax machines Frequently answers telephone This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g.fast-paced vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment ______________________________________________________________________ For Veterans points: Please show all of your employment history, including military service and related documentation (DD214) on the application.
