Profile

A small and well-established California law firm focusing on energy law is seeking an Associate Attorney to assist clients with navigating the complex and dynamic regulatory environment for electricity in California and throughout the western U.S.  The position provides an opportunity for direct client engagement, as well as regulatory advocacy before the California Public Utilities Commission in San Francisco, California, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C., the California Independent System Operator in Folsom, California, and in Western electricity market initiatives.

The position also involves contract negotiations and advising clients on new market products, energy imbalance market and western market expansion, technological requirements, transmission and interconnection rules and agreements, and resource adequacy.  Periodic in-person attendance at meetings in Sacramento, Folsom and San Francisco is required, as is occasional travel to other locations.

The ideal candidate will have at least two years of energy experience and excellent analytic and writing skills.  The candidate must be comfortable working in a complex subject area where rules are rapidly evolving.  As this is a virtual law firm, he or she must be a driven self-starter with a strong work ethic and ability to work independently from his or her home office. Home office location is flexible although California is preferred.  Candidates should be comfortable with public speaking and regular client interaction; good collaboration skills are also essential.

Additional qualifications:

  • Licensed attorney for the State of California
  • At least three years of experience practicing law
  • At least two years of experience in the energy field
  • Exceptional legal research and writing skills and analytical aptitude
  • Dependable and detail-oriented
  • Passion for working as an energy lawyer and experience that provides an understanding of energy policy in California
  • Ability to work successfully from home in a virtual firm environment and willingness to occasionally travel to meet the needs of clients.

Salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume, and brief writing sample.
