Assistant Attorney General - Counsel for Environmental Protection (Civil Litigation)
The candidate will initiate and lead complex civil litigation on environmental matters brought under the Attorney General's independent authority, including cases challenging impermissible administrative action by the federal government. Work will include cases arising under state or Federal law, and may relate to a wide range of environmental topics, such as water and air quality, habitat protection, toxic chemicals, climate change, and worker safety. Duties of attorneys in the Counsel for Environmental Protection unit will include: directing and assisting in investigations; drafting pleadings, motions and memoranda from initial filing through post-judgment proceedings; conducting all aspects of discovery; motions practice, trials, and participating in post-trial proceedings including any appeals.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must have 7+ years of civil litigation experience are required (ten years or more are preferred). Must have experience in a full range of discovery and motions practice. Must have strong analytical, research, and writing skills. Must have excellent judgment. Must have experience successfully handling multiple time-sensitive assignments. Should preferably have experience in complex environmental litigation, including toxic torts and actions for recovery of natural resource damages. Experience working with underrepresented or ethnically diverse communities or groups is a plus. An ability to read, write or speak in another language in addition to English is desired. Must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program and be licensed to practice law.
