Prisoner Rights Impact Litigation Attorney
The candidate will advance the work of Institutional Legal Services Project which is dedicated to proactively representing youth, prisoners, immigrants, and others who are incarcerated or detained in state and federal institutions (and those recently released) in individual cases, class actions, and impact litigation to create systemic change and protect civil rights. This position will focus on advancing criminal justice reform and strategies to reduce mass incarceration in Florida. Subjects of litigation may include addressing unconstitutional conditions in Florida’s prisons, jails and juvenile detention facilities concerning, for example, issues of solitary confinement, racial disparities, medical and mental healthcare, the rights of LGBTQ persons, disability rights, and sexual abuse. The focus of the position may change based on changes in the law, the circumstances in Florida, or the needs of the organization and our partners.Responsibilities: Conduct fact investigation, fact analysis, and legal research as part of impact litigation development and systemic policy advocacy related to criminal justice reform; Conduct client interviews and case investigation at institutions around the state of Florida including prisons, jails, detention centers, and juvenile justice facilities; Engage in effective and regular communications with clients, witnesses, co-counsel, experts, and state agencies; Draft legal motions, briefs, memos, and other documents in support of impact litigation; Draft and conduct all aspects of discovery; Litigate impact cases at the trial and appellate levels in federal and state courts; Respond to requests for legal assistance from incarcerated and formerly incarcerated persons; Work with community-based organizations and other allies related to FLS litigation and policy goals; and Any other duties as assigned by the Executive Director and/or the Project Director.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have Juris Doctorate Degree. Must have 3 years of federal court civil litigation or comparable legal experience, preferably including litigation of systemic reform cases, prison litigation, and/or civil rights litigation. Should have excellent research and writing skills. Admission to the Florida Bar or ability to sit for Feb 2020 Florida Bar exam is needed. Must have excellent and consistent attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. Should have strong written and verbal communication, organizational skills, and time management abilities. Experience using LegalServer (or similar computer-based case management system) and Google Suites, a plus.
