Criminal Defense Staff Attorney - Community Intake Unit The candidate will provide zealous advocacy and counsel for people post-arrest but before arraignment to provide a comprehensive representation throughout the process of potential criminal proceedings. May connect and refer people to other resources to assist in housing, mental health and substance abuse issues, for example. Discuss diversion program opportunities. Monitor progress in diversion pre-arraignment. Assist in preservation of evidence. Connect people to staff attorneys for post-arraignment representation. Connect to resources to assist in housing, mental health and substance abuse issues.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must have 3+ years of experience in criminal defense trial level practice and be in compliance with First Department Felony requirements, including experience as first chair for trials. Should have New York State bar admission (or ability to waive into New York State from another jurisdiction). A demonstrated commitment to public defense, social justice, and racial justice is required. Should have knowledge of felony sentencing. Experience with direct and cross examination of expert witnesses is essential. Knowledge of relevant New York State laws including evidence laws, criminal and constitutional laws, statutory interpretation, and ethical principles contained in the Rules of Professional Conduct is a must.
