Senior General Attorney
The candidate serves as a trial attorney for Union Pacific in the state of California and supervises the trial office in the City of Industry, CA. The trial office consists of a team of three trial attorneys, two paralegals and one legal assistant. The Senior General Attorney is primarily responsible for defending the highest exposure employee and third-party personal injury lawsuits that are assigned to the trial office as well as employment law and commercial litigation matters. The successful candidate will also provide legal counseling and advice to an assigned internal business partner. This job advises organizational clients in a variety of legal matters to provide a safe workplace and manage risk and exposure. Represents the company as lead counsel before federal and state courts, administrative agencies and arbitration panels to achieve the best outcome. The position also involves collaboration with operating managers to develop themes and defenses to actions filed or threatened against the railroad or filed on behalf of the railroad. Responsibilities include assisting in defense of extremely high exposure cases across a broad spectrum of legal specialties. Review and analyze litigated lawsuits or claims filed by employees, third parties or other entities. Prosecute suits filed on behalf of the company against other railroads, vendors or customers. Identify and prepare key officers, directors, managers and employees for depositions. Examine and recommend resolution of litigated cases or legal issues associated with significant contracts. Strong presentation skills. Perform quality substantive work as evidenced by successful completion of assigned matters. Work well on cross-functional teams. Strong administrative skills to effectively manage multiple matters. Process management skills as evidenced by design and implementation of initiatives and/or advanced litigation skills with ability to try and otherwise represent UP in significant matters. Substantive expert for one or more significant practice areas. Develop and coach less experienced attorneys and paralegals. Significant trial experience as first chair or co-lead counsel.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have a Juris Doctor degree. Should be admitted to practice law in the state of California. Should have 7+ years of work experience. Should preferably have 5 years experience in the general practice of law with emphasis on litigation, including extensive trial experience.
