ProfileStaff Attorney DUTIES: Work as court-appointed counsel to defend indigent parents in cases filed by the Department of Children and Family Services in Alameda County Juvenile Dependency Court. Providing clients with the highest quality client-directed legal defense, systemic objectives of teams include keeping children out of foster care, shortening lengths of stay for children in foster care, promoting quality visiting arrangements, and ensuring that families receive services that are well-tailored to expediting safe and lasting reunification. Keep case data and client legal notes and files up to date. Attorneys joining can expect intensive, interdisciplinary training on California juvenile dependency law, trauma-informed practices, and litigation skills. Conduct hearings and trials, often on an emergency basis. Staff attorneys are expected to provide diligent and zealous representation at all court appearances and throughout the course of a case, including litigating contested issues, active motion practice and the filing and litigating of interim writ appeals, as well as out-of-court advocacy and settlement negotiation. Will work closely with the in-house Social Worker and Mentor Parent, as well as relevant community partners, to provide holistic assistance on collateral issues affecting clients’ dependency cases. May also participate in systemic advocacy, supervise law school interns, and engage in coalition-building efforts with aligned community-based agencies.
Qualification and Experience
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be members of the California Bar or awaiting admission and have excellent litigation, written, and oral communication skills. Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to apply, as well as with other second-language proficiency. Should be able to demonstrate strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, an ability to work as part of a team, and a desire to share in both the exhilaration and challenges of a quickly evolving field. Must have the organizational skills necessary to maintain an active, high caseload and the willingness to participate in implementing systems that promote efficient case management.
