Disability Claims Specialist
DUTIES: Under the general direction of the Geographical Section Chief, Bureau of Disability Determination Services (DDS), Division of Rehabilitation Services, serves as staff assistant, providing a wide variety of technical and procedural training and public relations activities directed toward accurate, expedient case processing; provides adjudication skills to assist in completing the assigned/transferred cases; provides information concerning the disability program, answers questions regarding specific cases and/or resolves complaints made by individuals or agencies, offering intra-agency assistance by working with other Human Services components; assists in special studies, preparation of specific correspondence as directed to medical practitioners, state legislators and federal congressmen; makes recommendations pertaining to complex vocational issues submitted for assessment by professional adjudicative staff at initial and all appellate levels in order to determine the ability of the customers to engage in work activity.

Qualification and Experience

REQUIREMENTS: Requires a bachelor’s degree with major courses in medical, premedical, legal, paralegal, nursing, psychology, pharmacy, health, biological sciences, physical sciences, business administration, management or disability claims adjudication. Requires extensive knowledge of program and policies relating to the disabled and provisions of the Social Security Act and Amendments and Social Security Administration and bureaus involved in Disability Programs. Requires extensive knowledge of medical terminology, body systems, impairments and understanding of their disabling effects. Requires knowledge and understanding of basic personal computer including, but not limited to, keyboarding skills and disability claims processing system.
