Coverage Attorney
The candidate will be responsible to provide legal counsel and support for firm associates and management in making informed decisions regarding claims, in particular by: assessing firm insurers’ rights and obligations; evaluating material risks and options facing firm insurers; and identifying realistic options available to firm insurers. Provide legal counsel and support to enable firm associates and management to make timely decisions. Provide legal counsel and support as efficiently as possible, including; making full use of internal staff and resources; and managing outside counsel and vendors, as needed. Report and provide legal counsel to firm associates and management on legal developments regarding insurance coverage and claims handling issues relevant to firm’s business. Travel to and personally appear at court conferences, mediations, arbitrations, strategy sessions, witness interviews, site visits or as otherwise necessary, primarily in the United States, but with some international travel possible. Provide testimony when called upon for information that is not privileged, confidential or protected from disclosure. Assist with review of potential acquisitions. Maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and ethics. Develop creative ideas and solutions to real time business problems and/or business opportunities. Empower self and teammates to continuously improve firm’s business processes / systems and develop and escalate ideas and solutions. Consistently deliver superior customer service to both internal and external business partners. Demonstrate alignment with firm’s Commitments. Prioritize and organize work in a self-directed manner. Attain and maintain knowledge of assigned department. Perform other duties as required, including supporting and coordinating with other department colleagues.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must have completion of law school with a Juris Doctorate and admission to a state Bar. 7 – 15 years of complex insurance coverage experience, whether as outside counsel or through employment in the insurance industry is needed. Must exhibit excellent writing skills – providing cogent and succinct analysis of facts, issues and the law with sound reasoning and conclusions. Excellent speaking and negotiation skills – ability to communicate effectively and efficiently to a wide variety of audiences, including senior management, company employees with no legal background, mediators, adverse parties and judges are needed. Should be able to manage external and internal resources effectively and in a reasonable, professional manner. Should be well-versed in coverage issues involving long-tail claims (e.g., asbestos, environmental, or other product liability). Familiarity with construction defect law and coverage issues, and coverage issues arising from sexual misconduct claims is beneficial.
