Post-Graduate Legal Fellowship Sponsorship
The candidate will be providing information and education to migrants in country of origin; offering accompaniment and continuity of services before, during and after migrants present at the Mexico-US border; developing a pilot program to allow for access to counsel at the port of entry to protect and advance the rights of migrants to seek asylum and other humanitarian relief. Children’s Rights: identifying and connecting with immigrant children and families in the child welfare system to provide education and consultation and advance opportunities for immigration relief; providing Padilla counsel and immigration advice and representation to immigrant children involved in the juvenile justice system. Crimmigration: providing representation to individuals in removal proceedings while in criminal custody, especially to individuals with severe mental illness; updating resources on collateral immigration consequences of Arizona criminal convictions and fighting criminal grounds of removability. Detained Migrant Women (Cis & Transgender): representing survivors of gender-based violence both in the United States and abroad, and/or women with mental health concerns using trauma-informed practices; implementing creative strategies for release and to end the detention of survivors; holistic representation of women including coordination of mental health services inside of detention and advocating with ICE for therapy / crisis hotline or other additional supportive services currently not available for women; build the Florence Project’s network of survivor-based groups and coalitions supporting survivors. Detained LGBTQ+ Migrants: representing LGBTQ+ migrants; collaborating with LGBTQ+-led organizations to build deep client connections and to develop LGBTQ+ friendly community education; implementing creative strategies for release and to end the detention for LGBTQ+ migrants; bringing attention to conditions of detention for LGBTQ+ migrants. Due Process Issues: identifying systemic due process issues in our local courts and/or in custody, and training staff to ensure issues are preserved; providing representation on appeal to challenge due process errors. Mental Health Advocacy: representing individuals with mental illness in both immigration and criminal custody who are not eligible for appointment of counsel pursuant to Franco-Gonzalez v. Holder and/or who have been erroneously denied appointment of counsel; documenting and reporting violations of the Franco-Gonzalez settlement in the Arizona detained courts. 3L law student, LLM, or recent law graduate. Fluency or professional proficiency in Spanish is required. Must take the bar exam or be licensed to practice law, in good standing, in any state in the United States prior to beginning the fellowship. Applicants proposing to provide representation to immigrant children must be willing to take the Arizona bar exam or be admitted or eligible to be admitted to the Arizona bar. For all other proposals, the Arizona bar exam or admission is preferred, but not required. Demonstrated commitment to a career in public interest and to the population or need the project proposes to serve or fill. Strong oral advocacy skills. Demonstrate commitment to advocating for indigent immigrant clients in a respectful and empowering way. Demonstrate a zealous support of the Florence Project’s mission. Strong legal research skills. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse populations. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Highly organized, an innovative thinker, and work in high-volume settings with limited resources. Excellent problem solving, research and analytical skills. Effectively manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. Demonstrate to be a hardworking, flexible, respectful team player that can work effectively in a collaborative, innovative, and client centered work environment. Ability to work independently, be adaptable and reliable in the face of conflict, pressure, crisis or changing priorities. Exhibit high ethical standards and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be able to pass federal and state background checks.
