SVP-General Counsel Responsibilities: Drafting, negotiating and overseeing contracts for all areas of Healthcare Services and related organizations, including the education of internal constituents regarding contractual requirements. Assisting in the planning and strategic development process by providing legal and business advice relating to the operation of the Network. Effectively managing the existing legal function through the development of staff and the administration of operating budgets, and through the continual monitoring of quality outcomes. Moving the organization forward by working collaboratively with senior management colleagues to arrive at and implement short and long-term organizational decisions which utilize organizational, industry, and competitive knowledge. Effectively represent the organization to inside and outside constituents and customers through community service, formal presentations, and marketing and legislative efforts. Being on-call as necessary to address staff questions and meet the needs of a dynamic healthcare organization.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree from an accredited law school, ideally a top-tier institution. Admission to the New Mexico Bar or the ability and willingness to be admitted. 15+ years of legal experience, preferably at a top law firm followed by in-house positions of successively increasing responsibility. Substantial experience with general healthcare and health insurance law. Understanding of and experience with regulatory and compliance statues. (HIPAA, Stark, Anti-Kickback, EMTALA, etc.). Experience with tax-exempt organization law and tax-exempt finance law. Knowledge of and experience with healthcare transactions including M&A. Experience managing both an internal legal team and outside counsel. Ability to engender trust among business partners, providing timely advice and counsel that non-lawyers will both understand and heed. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Ability to lead by example including a willingness to “roll up your sleeves” and undertake day-to-day legal work. Ability to draft and revise institutional policies, regulations, bylaws, briefs, and legal responses as needed. An appreciation of the gravity of the work, but also a very real warmth, empathy, and a good-natured sense of humor. A personal commitment to health and wellness. 15+ years of experience in healthcare and/or health insurance law as well as laws pertaining to tax-exempt organizations, and transactional law in a healthcare context. Experience with healthcare delivery and health plans as well as deep knowledge of the compliance landscape. DESIRED: Robust understanding of managed care/insurance landscape (ACA, CMS, etc.) and the laws/business concerns that impact healthcare delivery systems. Experience working with a Board of Directors in a healthcare setting, ideally as Corporate Secretary. Experience with tax-exempt bond financings. Track record of improving the efficiency of an in-house legal department by adeptly assessing talent and managing workflow processes.
