Senior Underwriting Counsel Duties: Provides underwriting support, counsel, and authorization to company personnel, agents, and customers, related to the issuance of real estate title insurance commitments and policies. Utilizes underwriting standards and guidelines within delegated authority limits, to underwrite the issuance of title insurance. Provides guidance to company personnel in the performance of real estate settlement services. Issues underwriting standards and guidelines in accordance with established company processes. Responsible for communicating information related to underwriting and real estate settlement services from superiors to subordinates. Consistently demonstrates highly-effective collaboration skills with peers, clients and sister offices to address the state-wide underwriting needs of the Florida NCS operations. Competent, proactive resolution of title policy and endorsement underwriting questions from customers, commercial closing personnel, sister offices, and NCS Florida underwriters. Assists all closing/transaction management personnel with title comments, survey reads, underwriting, etc. on commercial transactions. Assist production team with search and exam related questions and procedures. Demonstrates fluent proficiency with Florida NCS established paperless environment, paperless transaction folder organization, and file labeling protocols. Leverage all capabilities and enhancements of the company’s national production/workflow platform (FAST), Assignments are complex in nature, usually requiring originality and ingenuity. Operates with some latitude for un- reviewed action or decision. Focus of interaction is at middle and senior manager level. Work under minimal supervision.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Licensed to practice law, in good standing. 8-10 years title underwriting experience. Previous commercial title examination experience and national commercial underwriting experience required. Must be familiar with real estate law. Ability to come up with creative solutions to unique circumstances. Requests or issues that are above scope of responsibility and approval limits are referred next level underwriter. Generally no supervision of others, however, may supervise administrative personnel. May be responsible for coaching and directing work ofJunior underwriters. Expert level knowledge of commercial title principles and practices. Confident and comfortable working under pressure and with deadlines. Willingness to commit the time necessary to meet commercial customer/law firm agent demands; including significant working hours (beyond 40-hour work week) during peak pre-closing/closing periods. Customer Service oriented to the highest degree; must possess professional written and verbal communication skills that would be respected by elite members of the legal communities around the country. Knowledge and comfort in making or crafting proactive underwriting decisions that protect the company’s interest and simultaneously find solutions to allow transactions to proceed. Ability to abstract and compile data from public property records and the ability to examine commercial real property titles are vital. Excellent understanding of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of real estate title and settlement process. General knowledge of Federal and State regulations related to real estate title insurance and settlement services. General understanding of underwriting real estate transactions for the issuance of title insurance policies. Ability to collaborate and act decisively. Detail oriented. Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills. Good organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and timely follow up. Strong negotiation skills. Requires abstract thinking and creative solutions. Ability to ‘think outside the box’ and make unique yet sound decisions to resolve complex issues. Ability to build relationships and create rapport. Excellent understanding of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of real estate title and settlement process. General knowledge of Federal and State regulations related to real estate title insurance and settlement services.
