Assistant Public Defender The candidate will perform duties to effectively and efficiently execute the policies of the Public Defender. Will assist with administrative responsibilities, manage supervising attorneys, conduct trainings, and handle complex cases. Execute and implement the policies established by the Public Defender to maximize effectiveness and efficiency. Perform administrative duties in the absence of the Public Defender and manage, supervise, and train Senior Deputy Public Defenders, Deputy Public Defenders, investigators, and secretarial staff. Routinely confer and consult with the Assistant Public Defender. Conduct the representation in complex, difficult cases.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must have 4+ years of experience as a practicing attorney, including 2+ years in the practice of criminal law as a defense attorney. Should have knowledge of: Philosophy to provide quality criminal defense representation services in an efficient manner; Comprehensive understanding of legal precedents applicable to the practice of criminal law in California; Legal research methods; California criminal procedure; Complete understanding of the rules of evidence; Supervision and training approaches that inspire and motivate; and techniques for managing a considerable caseload. Must have ability to: Work well with a variety of personalities; Manage supervisors, attorneys, investigators, and secretarial staff; Provide frequent legal training; Quickly analyze cases to determine issues and appropriate dispositions; Communicate, orally and in writing, in a clear and concise manner; and Collaborate with staff, judges, prosecutors, and other criminal justice partners; and teach approaches to attorneys to manage a considerable caseload.
