Staff Attorney
The candidate will administer the Enhancing Access to Housing and Employment Opportunities grant in Frederick County, Maryland. will focus on eliminating barriers for low-income residents of Frederick County by providing legal services on matters including expungements, consumer, housing and employment. Handle all functions related to case work from initial intake through representation of clients before all relevant agencies, courts, etc. Staff attorneys may be expected to work with other attorneys, paralegals and students on cases or projects. Maintain case files in accordance with Legal Aid Standards. Tasks assigned to staff attorneys may include any or allto the following: Screens clients for eligibility and make referrals, as appropriate. Conduct preliminary and subsequent interviews with clients. Conduct factual investigation and analysis, and legal research. Advise clients of results of investigation and research and counsel clients about their options. Prepare pleadings, including but not limited to, complaints, answers, memoranda of law, briefs, etc. Develop case theory and strategy for the representation of clients. Prepare cases and represent clients in negotiations, hearings, trials and appeals. Conducts community outreach and education sessions throughout Frederick County on expungements and other legal services offered by MLA. Hold expungement clinics at partner sites in Frederick County, at which participants will receive brief legal advice, referrals, and legal representation. Provide information and assistance to clinic participants for expungement of criminal records. Assist participants in identifying other legal issues for which MLA could provide services. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the essential functions of the position. Prior experience in poverty, expungement, consumer and/or housing law is preferred. Should be admitted to practice in the State of Maryland, or admitted in another jurisdiction and eligible for admission in the State of Maryland. Spanish language proficiency is desirable.
