Commercial Manager - Legal The candidate will assist in the development and implementation specialist commercial support in the US, on behalf of Head of Commercial Management, helping to drive deeper commercial awareness across the function, ensuring that the instructions made by the Legal function to external suppliers are priced in the most cost effective way, and making full use of the efficiency levers available to Group Legal. Will have a robust understanding of the type of services provided by each of vendor within particular regions and the types of services required by each lines of business in particular jurisdictions by partnering with the relevant lawyers. Will assist in the management of the vendor engagement, including working with internal lawyers to determine the appropriate vendor for new projects and matters and assist in the negotiation with the law firms on fee size and structure to ensure competitive pricing. The role holder will work closely with Procurement to manage the logistics and analysis of competitive bidding processes and RFPs, and prepare commercial analyses for the lawyers, including relative value of alternative fee arrangements. Setting agendas for the regular relationship review meetings with the key external vendors used by Legal and coordinating with internal lawyers to provide supporting analysis and conduct the meetings. Working with the Legal Data and Analytics capability to coordinate accurate, relevant and regular reporting and KPIs. Ensure internal feedback on the supplier performance is collated from across the function and reported in a way that is easy to understand and drives actions. Overseeing the reporting data quality, as an input to the Legal Data & Analytics capability. Provide support on all operational aspects of vendor engagement including the standard vendor billing processes, annual revision and distribution of terms of engagement, secondee tracking and usage, onboarding of new vendors and the maintenance of existing vendors in line with internal protocols. The Commercial Manager will resolve issues relating to billing at the most strategic firms. The role holder will also lead the identification, evaluation and implementation of process efficiency improvements and/or financial management regarding commercial management. Support the Head of Commercial Management to develop and execute strategies to ensure the function is globally connected and well-positioned to implement the enhanced Legal Commercial Management mandate. Continually and pro-actively identify areas for improvement across the Legal function’s global Commercial Management operations - including opportunities for process and system enhancement, cost efficiency and risk management. Support the Head of Commercial Management and other in overseeing the external legal spend AOP target and identify and implement opportunities for better management, control and reporting. Ensure the identification and implementation of process improvements and best practices across Commercial Management to enable the highest operational standards. Build strong relationships with Regional COO’s, business managers and instructing lawyers. Build excellent relationships with Global Legal Panel Firms and other key external suppliers to create maximum value for the firm. Work closely with Procurement, ISR and Operational Risk colleagues to drive connectivity between Commercial Management processes and Operational Risk Management requirements (vendor risk management, Associated Persons checks, ISR checks etc.). Drive a high performance culture through delivering standards, collaboration and effective people interaction. Agree responsibilities within formal and informal network, providing context, direction and confidence to deliver results. Collaborate with other business partners and Global Functions areas to ensure commonality and consistency of solutions. Balancing sometimes conflicting requirements of Group, Region and various staff functions such as Risk, Tax, Finance and Legal. Maintaining a global perspective, but with particular consideration of regional distributions (staff, budgets, resources, operations) and the impact of these; and ensuring a proportionate balance in each region. Managing a uniform approach to Commercial Management operations, in view of disparate operating procedures already in operation (within the organisation and within departments) and the unique issues, requirements and problems associated with each. Engender the support of a number of internal lawyers across the Function who may have their own conflicting local pressures. Compliance with Group standards, whilst accommodating specific organisational requirements. Guiding and instructing Global Legal colleagues on cost controls. Experience in Legal Commercial Management – either through working as a qualified lawyer or undertaking a similar Commercial Manager role in a peer organisation – a deep understanding of Legal operations is critical.
