Supervising Attorney-RJU Duties: Engage in policy advocacy on the City, State, and Federal level regarding issues relevant to communities of color. Collaborate with specialized units, including but not limited to the Community Justice Unit and the LGBT Law and Policy Initiative, to identify issues for impact litigation and oversee and support those efforts. Examine daily practices and areas of our work and how they impact communities of color. Engage in data collection and analysis on racial inequity issues. Utilize data and research to support various media, advocacy, and education efforts. Develop and produce advocacy and public education materials for community outreach and media campaigns. Develop and produce internal and external training materials. Help develop racial equity and diversity initiatives to enhance and promote racial justice within the organization. Seek visibility through public appearances including but not limited to speaking engagements, media appearances, and conferences, for the purpose of contributing to public debate on racial inequality. Engage in coalition-building with community and government mobilization efforts to effect policy change.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: Admission to NYS Bar. 6 years' legal practice; public interest law preferred. Favorable consideration will be given to attorneys who have knowledge and experience in the area(s) of criminal defense, civil legal services, and juvenile rights. Experience practicing law, including litigation, through a racial justice framework. Favorable consideration will be given to an attorney with impact litigation experience. Exceptional public speaking ability and experience. Demonstrated commitment to racial and social justice work, civil rights, and anti-discrimination law. Favorable consideration will be given to a candidate with experience in policy work surrounding racial justice issues. Favorable consideration will be given to an attorney with a deep understanding of intersectionality and its relation to structural racism. Experience supervising and mentoring others. Experience working with underserved communities, and experience with grassroots community organizing.. Ability to train and provide professional development opportunities for colleagues. Demonstrated leadership ability. Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, and ability to foster constructive, collegial working relationships with colleagues. Commitment to exploring alternative approaches for legal practice. Ability to work in and value a collaborative team model. Pro bono, government, public service and/or academic experience is desirable. Commitment and experience working with and building networks and partnerships with racial justice organizations and advocates.
