Staff Attorney, Homeless Veterans Project The candidate will lead trainings, provide technical assistance, and review completed applications for case managers at partner organizations. Will also carry a caseload and directly represent veterans throughout the Los Angeles County in cases related to VA disability benefits, military discharge upgrades and traffic tickets. Work as part of a team and share responsibilities related to the program, such as identifying systematic problems within the VA benefits application process and developing strategies to resolve them. This may include working directly with staff and leadership at the Department of Veterans Affairs. May also participate in other projects related to improving these systems and may perform other duties as needed.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must have 0-3 years of experience to provide free legal services to help homeless veterans with disabilities gain access to critical income-support benefits. Experience in developing and leading trainings is required. Should preferably have experience working with veterans, people with disabilities, and people who are low-income and/or homeless. Should preferably be awaiting results or be licensed to practice in California or another state. Veteran status is preferred. Bilingual in Spanish a plus. Strong teaching and public speaking skills are needed. Should have ability to interact with a wide range of clients utilizing client-centered lawyering and trauma-informed frameworks.
