Legal Assistant I
Duties: Act in a confidential capacity to all Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys. Supervise legal duties of one or more office assistants, when applicable. Manage calendar, schedule and coordinate meetings/events Reconcile purchase card expenses and prepare vouchers to submit invoices for payment. Coordinate travel itineraries. Create, type, and edit presentations, correspondence, memos, reports, graphs, organizational charts, and faxes Maintain and manage administration needs (i.e. office supplies, IT support, etc.) Assist with the on-boarding of new hires on assigned team. Know and understand federal civil procedure and the process of filing a lawsuit. Know and understand local court rules to ensure that they are followed for each case. Perform legal research in areas of well-established law to answer a given question. Proofread documents. Review grammar and sentence structure. Check citations in briefs and other legal documents to determine the accuracy of quoted material. Check citations to determine the accuracy of citation format according to the Bluebook, local court rules, or other citation guidelines required by the office. Prepare documents such as motions, memoranda of law, briefs, orders, petitions for filing, recording and process service via mail, facsimile or messenger. Prepare correspondence to be sent to clients, courts, and other attorneys. Filing court documents either by traditional “paper” methods or via ECM/ECF federal electronic filing systems Prepare trial notebooks and exhibits. Maintain the case file. Copy and collate legal documents and exhibits. Maintain documents in our Document Storage System. Draft memoranda regarding findings of research. Maintain the case file information in RESULTS Organize, index and summarize Discovery materials. Assist Attorneys with compliance of all court rules regarding maintaining files, as well as internal ADF policies, such as the Document Retention Policy. Calendaring court dates in RESUTLS and Outlook (court appearances, dates briefs are due, etc.). Organizing, indexing, and summarizing discovered materials; document numbering (“Bates” stamping). Monitoring status of legislation and cases via PACER Serve as back-up for other assigned legal secretaries/paralegals.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: 1-3 years’ legal assistant experience preferred. Knowledge of: Local court rules to ensure that they are followed for each case. Federal civil procedure and process of filing a lawsuit. Demonstrated proficiency in: Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Word, and Outlook. Strong time management skills. Strong organizational skills. Excellent analytical skills. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to: Professionally handle confidential information. Learn, understand, and apply basic legal principles to particular sets of facts. Make sounds decisions under demanding conditions.
