Assistant State’s Attorney
The candidate will file 2-3 appellate briefs each month in appeals arising out of the Circuit Court of Cook County. The briefs can include cases involving appeals from criminal convictions, juvenile delinquency adjudications, juvenile abuse and neglect findings, involuntary commitment and medication orders and asset forfeiture rulings. Typical recurring issues include evidentiary matters, sufficiency of the evidence claims, statutory construction questions, and constitutional challenges. Research projects for attorneys in the CCSAO trial division are occasionally assigned. Must have excellent academic achievement, strong verbal and written communication skills, solid work ethic, and attention to detail, accountability, sound judgment, and must uphold the mission and values of the CCSAO at all times. Should have some experience with appellate practice, whether through school or work. 2+ years of experience as a judicial clerk, Appellate Court research staff member, appellate practice in a governmental agency or associate in a law firm working on appellate matters is needed. Extensive experience involving law review, moot court competition and legal research and writing is necessary. Familiarity with Illinois criminal law and procedure is mandatory. Licensed to practice in the State of Illinois is essential.
