Job Overview: A law firm seeks an experienced Criminal Defense Attorney to join its team in southern Maine. This role is suited for a seasoned attorney passionate about defending clients in high-stakes criminal cases. The ideal candidate will have significant courtroom experience, including jury trials, and be prepared to handle complex legal matters while maintaining strong relationships with clients and colleagues. Duties:

  • Represent clients in serious criminal cases, including sex crimes, DUI/OUI charges, domestic violence, and financial crimes.
  • Conduct jury trials, bail hearings, and evidentiary hearings, advocating vigorously for clients.
  • Develop case strategies, conduct legal research, and draft motions related to 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendment violations.
  • Work closely with expert witnesses, evaluate evidence, and manage complex defense investigations.
  • Provide legal counsel and maintain clear communication with clients throughout their cases.
  • Collaborate with team members, including legal assistants and interns, to ensure efficient case management.
  • Participate in final contested protection from abuse hearings and contested bail hearings.
  • Stay updated on changes in criminal law and case precedents.

Requirements:

  • Significant experience handling serious criminal matters, including trials and contested hearings.
  • Extensive knowledge of state and federal criminal laws.
  • Proven ability to manage high-pressure situations, make quick decisions, and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Strong negotiation, advocacy, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of client communication and management.
  • Preference for candidates with federal criminal defense experience.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in the state of Maine (candidates from other northeastern states may also be considered if interested in relocating).

Skills:

  • Strong trial and litigation skills, including jury trial experience.
  • Excellent legal research and writing abilities.
  • High emotional intelligence, conflict resolution capabilities, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Keen organizational skills and attention to detail.
