Job Overview:

A leading law firm is seeking a skilled Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property team. This position is responsible for handling complex and sensitive client work related to patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in the semiconductor industry. The role involves drafting patent applications, responding to communications from the USPTO, and collaborating with attorneys and clients on technological matters. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, preferably in electrical or chemical engineering, and be licensed to practice before the USPTO. Experience in semiconductor-related patent work is required.

Location:

Duties:

  • Prepare draft patent applications, incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from . and foreign patent offices concerning factual and technical matters.
  • Discuss scientific aspects of inventions with clients and inventors, providing attorneys with detailed reports on these discussions.
  • Serve as a liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office (PTO) throughout the patent application process.
  • Evaluate and report on the technological aspects of inventions and advise attorneys on specific technologies.
  • Organize, analyze, and summarize patent-related documents.
  • Communicate with staff, clients, vendors, and PTO personnel through various channels (email, phone, in person).
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks efficiently, especially under time constraints.
  • Identify and resolve complex patent-related issues.
  • Interact professionally with clients, attorneys, and staff, maintaining confidentiality and courtesy.
  • Provide guidance to legal support staff on technical issues, as needed.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technology trends and advise on related technology needs.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or another related technical field.
  • USPTO registration preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in semiconductor technologies.
  • Strong investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Expertise in drafting complex patent documentation.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with diverse teams.
  • Proficiency in various software applications and office equipment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to travel for client needs, including out-of-town assignments.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field.

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration (preferred).
