Self Help Attorney The candidate, under general supervision, is responsible for developing, planning, implementing, and administering the court's Self Help Program in assigned case types, including Civil and Probate. Will report to the Managing Self-Help Attorney and provide legal services to litigants not represented by counsel. May have responsibilities for the direct supervision of paraprofessional staff and interns. Plan, implement, and administer Self Help program activities. Develop and implement educational materials, workshops, and presentations for self-represented litigants, court staff, judicial officers, and justice partners on subject matter related to assigned case types and self-help services. Design and develop online content for the Court's Self Help website, which publicizes court services, provides multi-media informational videos, online courses, appointment schedulers, and other content aimed at educating the self-represented litigant. Distribute and explain necessary court forms. Provide instruction on completing the forms. Identify and provide referrals to court services and other community agencies and resources that provide relevant services. Prepare and maintain records of the court, monthly statistical reports, and scheduling. Research legal issues and statutory requirements to assist litigants. Advise self-represented litigants on types of relief available. Lead and direct the work of staff and interns. Use specialized software programs such as Articulate, Camtasia or other content development tools. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have graduated from an accredited law school. Must have 3 years of admission to the practice of law before the Supreme Court of the State of California including 2+ years of related experience practicing law in the State of California in the civil and/or probate law; proficiency in court forms software programs; with 2 years of experience providing legal services within a legal aid, public interest and/or self-help services organization. Active membership in the State Bar of California is required. Should have extensive knowledge of: court procedures, program and policy development and implementation, self-help related resources and referral services; case management practices; laws, regulation and professional practice relating to issues, disputes, and resolutions; legal terminology, court operations and courtroom procedure; and governmental and private community resources and referral agencies.
