United States Magistrate Judge The candidate will conduct pretrial proceedings in civil and criminal cases, including law and motion matters, settlement conferences, initial appearances, and bail hearings. Preside over jury and court trials in civil cases with the consent of the parties as well as trials and dispositions of misdemeanor cases. Must be , and have been for 5+ years, a member in good standing of the bar of the highest court of a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Territory of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, or the Virgin Islands of the United States, and have been engaged in the active practice of law for a period of 5+ years. Qualified applicants generally have 10+ years of experience practicing in federal court. May consider, as substitute experience for the active practice of law, any combination of the following: state judicial officer; federal judicial officer; attorney for federal or state agencies; law clerk to any judicial officer (limited to two years); and other legal experience considered suitable by a majority of the Court; Be competent to perform all duties of the office; be of good moral character; emotionally stable and mature; committed to equal justice under the law; in good health; patient and courteous; and capable of deliberation and decisiveness; Be less than seventy years old; Not be related to a judge of the district court at the time of initial appointment, as specified in 28 U.S.C. § 458; and, Be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States currently seeking citizenship or intending to become a citizen as soon as they meet the eligibility requirements.
