Staff Counsel Business and Human Rights The candidate will provide duties include: Working directly with the leadership of the Business and Human Rights Program, as well as with an internal cross-functional team to build and support key components of the Program. Working within the legal team to serve as point of contact for human rights risk analysis of business decisions and support efforts to advise legal and business leaders on human rights matters impacting the business. Assisting in review of products, policies, processes and procedures to develop strategies to mitigate risk. Conducting research and identify opportunities to highlight positive human rights impacts of technology. Assisting with development and execution of employee human rights training program. Conducting research and writing background reports for Human Rights Impact Assessments (HRIAs). Supporting relationships with external stakeholders, including organizations focused on technology and human rights, multi-stakeholder dialogues and international organizations. Coordinating efforts to share information about the BHRP’s work with external audiences.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must have JD degree and have 6+ years of relevant work experience. Must have bar membership and needed licenses. Must have 3+ years of experience in law, policy, human rights, advocacy, or in-house at a technology company handling legal or public policy issues related to privacy and free expression. Must have experience in the internet, communications or wireless technology industry, and/or in location based services. Must have ability to describe and distill complex policy, technology and human rights issues to audiences with different areas of expertise and different levels of understanding. Must have strong research, report writing and training/presentation skills. Must have experience engaging new and existing audiences through social media communication tools and strategies. Must have ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information. Must have experience working cross-functionally in multi-national settings or across different cultures and building and maintaining effective working relationships, as well as proven ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel. Must have experience building effective working relationships with advocacy organizations or working in multi-stakeholder settings. Must have passion for technology and human rights and a sound knowledge of the telecommunications and internet industries and intersection points with free expression and privacy.
