Staff Attorney Duties: The candidate assists and represents the Superintendent on legal matters. Ensures the District is in compliance with all laws and regulations pertaining to labor relations and personnel. Assists the department within Human Resources with employee relations, association agreements, labor and employment laws, staff development, and recruitment, selection and retention of staff. Ensures the District is in compliance with all policies, laws and regulations. Represents the Superintendent in due process hearings, grievances, discrimination claims, civil rights issues, arbitrations and administrativeproceedings of the School Board. Acts as advocate of the Superintendentâ€™s position when considering student expulsions and discipline matters. Coordinates matters of student discipline involving expulsion, individuals with Disability Education Act hearings, and student rights. Cooperates and consults with the Board Attorney on legal matters involving the District, as appropriate. Serves in the capacity of attorney for the School Board in the absence of the Board Attorney or on a priority basis. Coordinates the Districtâ€™s ADA (Americans With Disabilities) Committee. Plans and presents in-service training regarding legal issues.
Qualification and Experience
Qualification: The candidate should have Law degree from an accredited law school. Admitted and duly licensed to practice law in Florida is essential. Must be eligible to become a member of the Bar for the Federal District Court for the Middle District of Florida and for the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Judicial Court. Must have 2+ years of experience practice of law with knowledge and experience in the Rules of Evidence and Administrative law referred. Significant trial experience is essential. Experience in administrative proceedings is essential. Experience in public school law is essential. Must have skill in oral and written communications. Computer literate is essential.
