Attorney 1 - Child Advocacy Unit DUTIES: Taking inventory of new cases. Interviewing and visiting with juvenile clients in their designated placements, including foster homes and residential placements state-wide. Requesting initial investigation, making social service referrals, and directing assigned social worker in his/her duties. Communicating with children, parents, mental health providers and other juvenile stakeholders. Reviewing court filed pleadings and researching and drafting initial pretrial motions Attending, participating and representing juveniles in various meetings, hearings and trials concerning their legal and “best interest.†Working on a team with other attorneys to appropriately staff each courtroom and provide the best representation possible. Representing children in termination of parental rights trials and hearings related to the termination of rights. Representing juveniles in the appellate process including the preparation of appropriate motions, briefs and conducting oral arguments.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Must have JD Degree. Must be admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. A Masters or Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work is highly preferable. Must be knowledgeable of criminal law and the criminal justice system, Juvenile Act, Child Protective Services Law, Adoption Act, and other state and federal statutes impacting dependent children, including educational statutes.. Must have excellent communication skills (oral and written). Must possess analytical ability, problem solving, and research skills. Fluency in Spanish preferable.
