Paralegal, Immigrants' Rights Program
The candidate will assist the work of the Immigrants’ Rights Project by providing litigation and administrative support to attorneys, including preparing and filing pleadings in federal court. Prepare and file legal pleadings in federal courts (from district court through Supreme Court level), and occasionally state courts around the United States. Arrange for service of legal documents; prepare and serve discovery documents; research court rules and procedures. Maintain case files, attorneys’ correspondence files, and internal litigation tracking systems including case summaries and calendar of litigation deadlines and court dates. Provide administrative and litigation support to attorneys. Includes assisting attorneys with calendar, correspondence, expenses, and travel arrangements. Research and analyze issues where appropriate. Serve as liaison with co-counsel and clients. Respond to individuals contacting the Project for legal assistance. Occasional drafting of materials and letters. Serve as liaison for administrative relations with ACLU affiliates and other offices within National ACLU. Update content on the ACLU website and intranet. Provide support to attorneys in the recruitment, hiring and supervision of interns. Assist in the administration of the legal internship program. Work collaboratively with team of other paralegals and support staff in both New York and San Francisco offices to ensure that office systems run smoothly. Demonstrate a commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts. Perform other job related special projects and other duties as assigned by the Director, Managing Attorney, and Staff Attorneys.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must have an Associate’s or a Bachelor’s degree. Should have ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and see them through to completion. Must have ability to work well under tight deadlines and take initiative. Should have strong organizational and administrative skills and the ability to multitask and meet deadlines. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal skills. Should have strong research skills, including internet research. Should have ability to work independently as well as within a team while maintaining a high level of efficiency and professionalism. Commitment to public interest work and to civil liberties in particular is essential. Should preferably have 1+ year of paralegal or related experience. Experience providing administrative support is desired. Should preferably have fluency in Spanish. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office; familiarity with spreadsheets is desired. Experience creating tables of contents, tables of authorities, mail merges, and creating/inserting macros is desired. Should preferably have experience with web design, layout, and electronic posting of content.
