Associate Counsel â€“ Advertising The candidate will advise business clients in the Global Advertising & Brand Management and Consumer Marketing groups to help them manage legal risk and deliver on their mission to provide innovative and valuable offers, benefits and experiences to current and prospective Card Members. Serve as an advisor to GCO colleagues and other business units across the organization on complex and novel advertising initiatives, including the marketing of new benefits, claims and disclosures, special offers, native advertising, event sponsorships, experiential marketing, talent engagements, and sweepstakes/contests. Review and counsel on advertising campaigns across all media. Draft and revise marketing claims, disclosures and other customer communications. Draft and negotiate agreements for celebrity talent, social media influencers, sports/music/event sponsorships, partner offers, and experiences/events. Advise business clients on executing clear and compliant consumer experiences onsite at events, online and via digital channels (app integrations, etc.). Collaborate with colleagues across the General Counselâ€™s Organization and other groups, like Privacy and Compliance.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have J.D. with admission to practice law in the United States; admission to the New York Bar in good standing or eligibility to do so is preferred. 2+ years of work experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal environment is required. Should have interest in developing a deep understanding of business needs and objectives with a close partnership with business clients. Must have strong communication skills with ability to convey advice clearly and synthesize complex issues. Should have experience reviewing and drafting contracts. Experience advising marketing teams and reviewing advertising content is preferred. Knowledge of advertising laws, including FTC guidelines, state UDAP laws, CFPB UDAAP principles, and sweepstakes/contests is desired. Strong interest and/or experience in sponsorships, talent endorsement deals, experiential marketing, music and branded entertainment is desired. Demonstrated experience in gaining credibility, managing expectations, and developing strong working relationships with legal colleagues and clients is preferred.
