Assistant Director Tax - Tax Exempt
Duties: Manage the organization’s federal and state tax compliance for its exempt entities using deep skills and knowledge of Federal and State Tax Code, specifically as it is related to not-for-profit tax exempt organizations, including, but not limited to, hospitals, foundations, and joint venture arrangements. Responsible for completing and managing all annually required federal and state tax filings for all exempt entities in the Novant Health (NH) system, including income tax, excise tax, foreign reporting and others as applicable. Assist in the completion of any IRS Form 1023s in order to obtain not-for-profit status and tax exemption for any newly formed organizations as required. Responsible for review of the exempt organization’s input to the quarterly and annual tax provision, tax footnotes, tax accounting, and ASC 740 research and implementation. Responsible for reviewing the transfer pricing research and implementation as it intersects with exempt entities. Coordinate with departmental partners on all items that overlap in the tax-exempt and taxable areas. A variety of tax issues relating to tax-exempt status and tax compliance, including initial qualification, grant-making programs, revenue-generating activities, unrelated business income, charitable contributions, joint ventures, impact investing and other transactional matters including optimization of transaction structure. Provide tax support to Finance and Community Engagement in planning, organizing and filing the required documentation to meet the compliance requirements related to any required Community Health Needs Assessments and Implementation Plans as well as any related state filings. Provide tax advice regarding structuring social impact activities, charitable giving, and joint ventures. Conduct and document tax research necessary to support and substantiate tax advice, tax controversy, and tax return-signing positions. Monitor new developments in the tax law relating to tax-exempt organizations and the impact on existing or contemplated positions. Prepare or review tax positions, including those in tax memoranda and opinions; applications for exemption and foundation status; private letter rulings; responses to IRS or state agency inquiries and document requests; closing agreements; tax compliance tools; presentation materials; and other deliverables. Serve as a specialist on tax-exempt organization issues, including developing and providing instruction for internal education and policy preparation/maintenance. Coordinate with departmental partners on all items that overlap in the tax-exempt and taxable areas. Manages relationships and engagements with external tax consultants, auditors, and Federal/State taxing authorities. Advises on and manages the development of senior management’s strategic tax direction for NH, including developing solutions to obtain those objectives. Monitoring developments in Federal, State, and Local regulations and informing leaders of changes impacting reporting; supports the implementation of process changes as needed. Development and delivery of education, and educational material, to senior management regarding tax reporting requirements.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: 4 Year/Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Finance or similar (Required). Graduate degree (Preferred). CPA or JD, other licenses will be considerate at Management‘s discretion. 8 - 12 years (MGR/AD) in tax management or supervisory role; public accounting experience (Preferred). Experience in preparing/reviewing exempt entity (healthcare and/or not-for-profit) returns (Forms 990/990-T) with multi-state filings. Experience in preparing/reviewing 1065s associated with joint venture activities. Experience in preparing corporate (Form 1120) multi-state returns and tax provisions. Strong research and analysis skills; Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate complex information clearly to those with tax and non-tax backgrounds. Ability to drive/travel to multiple facilities/locations as needed. Must be available for seasonal and variable work; hours can vary and may include evenings and weekends in addition to the regular schedule.
Preferred: Public Accounting experience. Experience with large corporate provisions. Experience with consolidated returns. Infor/Lawson experience.
