Deputy Executive Director Duties: Lead Advancement Project in implementation of its strategic vision and goals, building alignment across all teams, initiatives, and staff.? Understand, articulate, and operationalize the Executive Director’s ideas and perspectives in pursuit of Advancement Project’s strategic objectives and programmatic goals.? Ensure alignment and prioritization of programmatic goals and activities in pursuit of mission and strategic objectives; monitor, evaluate and report on progress; work with the Leadership Team to assess the need for course corrections or adjustments to plans.? Develop, in concert with the Campaigns, Programs, Communications, new and innovative strategies in support of the organization’s mission and vision. Collaborate with Development, Campaigns, Communications, to successfully increase organizational visibility, grow audiences, and implement strategic advocacy campaigns. Ensure all programs and projects have clear goals and plans, meet regularly with program directors to discuss and review progress, identify barriers/gaps in project deliverables, and develop plans and solutions to address them, and track and report out on progress. Conduct program evaluations and develop social change metrics to measure progress related to Advancement Project’s strategic goals and overall efficacy and long-term strategic impact.? Manage Program Directors and facilitate regularly scheduled meetings of Program Directors. Assume the Executive Director’s management responsibilities during periods of Executive Director’s absence.? Work with program directors, CFO and Executive Director to develop annual budgets and monitor program budgets and deliverables throughout the year. Work with development staff on grant proposals/reports, ensure that programs are on target with grant deliverables and spending, and attend meetings with funders/donors as requested. Conduct research as necessary and maintain an intimate awareness of recent legal decisions, emerging trends, and best practices in racial justice movements and of the current news, events and attitudes shaping the climate of social and racial justice matters, in part by attending relevant trainings, workshops, and conferences. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: A JD degree and 10+ years of relevant legal experience, including civil rights litigation experience. 5 years of non-profit senior level management experience, preferably in a social justice organization. Experience leading and inspiring a growing and highly effective team with a strong commitment to staff development and a successful record of recruiting, retaining, and leading a results-oriented and diverse team. Experience working with grassroots organizations and coalitions on campaigns; understanding of communications strategies; and knowledge of progressive, especially racial justice movements. Experience in at least one of our main program areas (Education, Voting, Criminal Justice, Immigrant Justice). Demonstrated success in executing programs, developing, and implementing new initiatives. Strong interpersonal skills with a high level of emotional intelligence, integrity and sound judgment and ability to communicate and work collaboratively across the organization openly and with respect. Excellent oral communications, writing, editing, critical and strategic thinking, facilitation and leadership skills. Program evaluation and policy experience is a plus. Ability to work in a fast-paced, nimble environment with the demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple, competing tasks and demands.
