Chief Claims Counsel The candidate provides advice and counsel for OneBeaconâ€™s insurance policies and any litigation arising from coverage disputes to all levels of the organization. Monitors existing coverage litigation, including extra contractual exposures, and reports on a quarterly basis. Has ultimate authority to negotiate all extra contractual exposures. Directs decisions in compliance with state laws. Responsible for the oversight and development of the staff counsel program which provides legal representation and defense counsel for insureds. Sets the direction and implementation of claims litigation strategy and coverage determination. Is recognized in the company as the subject matter expert on all related matters. Communicates and participates in high level meetings, including with the Senior Executive Team on a monthly and quarterly basis. Maintains high level relationships. Effectively communicates strategic direction of the Claims Legal Group to internal and external audiences. Maintains a strong professional knowledge of regulatory and legal environments and applies this information effectively. Directs, manages, and develops staff and other Managers. This includes goal setting, assessment, staff selection, role alignment and completion of performance appraisals. Responsible for overall communication of goals and priorities. Must have Juris Doctorate degree. Must have 10+ years of insurance litigation, insurance claims and bad faith experience. Partner-level experience in a national insurance litigation law firm or similar position with an insurance company is strongly preferred. 5-7 Supervisory/Management years of experience is essential. Must have high degree of technical knowledge, problem solving, communication and decision-making skills, strategic planning ability and human resource management. Must have a familiarity with the law in all 50 states and a sense for judiciary objectives in resolving contractual responsibilities. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office suite and other electronic systems.
