Counsel – Technology, Brands and Procurement Upstream The candidate will be responsible for providing intellectual property and technology law related legal advice and services for assigned units of the Upstream Technology and Upstream Segment. Provide day-to-day legal support for the client SPU’s and Functions within Upstream and Upstream Technology. Interact with inventors, client IP managers and others, patent agents/analysts, and external counsel as necessary, to create, protect and acquire intellectual property rights globally for assigned clients, including filing and prosecuting US and worldwide patent applications; oversee such work by outside counsel as necessary. Engage with client technology, business and licensing representatives and others to develop and execute client IP strategies; provide counsel regarding how to achieve business objectives in the context of external intellectual property. Provide guidance and assist with the development of intellectual property strategies, including analysis and evaluation of external intellectual property rights and their potential impact on company operations. Provide support in development and execution of transactional strategy, contract drafting and negotiations and interpreting agreements for intellectual property and technology law-related matters. Perform the foregoing in the context of Upstream and Upstream Technology businesses that expect IP to be value-added assets while rigorously managing client and legal costs. Participate with legal colleagues, business clients, and client licensing experts to build and expand patent portfolios and assess operating freedom supporting multi-million dollar business development efforts. Licensed: patent attorney before the US Patent and Trademark Office; attorney before the state bar required. University degree in a relevant discipline, such as electrical, mechanical, petroleum or chemical engineering, physics, geophysics, chemistry required. The ability to handle seismic technology and/or computer implemented innovations is desirable. Sufficient intellectual property law experience including patent application drafting and prosecution to act with moderate coaching and oversight required. Experience investigating and evaluating external intellectual property and advising on its potential impact required. Ability to assimilate complex and ambiguous information and data to identify key issues and aid decisions making required. Demonstrated capacity to overcome obstacles and use an adaptable approach to achieve outstanding results required. Excellent communication and analytical skills in both written and spoken English required. Experience negotiating, drafting and interpreting significant intellectual property agreements required. Experience managing external service providers required.
