The candidate will be responsible for managing rights, production and marketing clearance and licensing matters in support of the Universal Parks and Resorts (UPR) Global Business Development department, the Universal Beijing Resort project, and potentially other UPR projects. Will also provide legal and business affairs support for UPR’s existing third party IP license agreements, including assisting with any necessary amendments or ancillary documents. Review and evaluate production, publicity, digital marketing/social media and custom content materials for intellectual property, personal rights, statutory law and talent/contractual issues, and provide clearance recommendations that balance creative and legal concerns. Liaise with the franchise development, marketing, music and legal teams at Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation, as well as the Labor, IP and Distribution legal teams, to coordinate, secure and track relevant legal clearance approvals for licensed material uses by UPR’s Global Business Development licensee partners, as well as by the Universal Beijing Resort and, potentially, for other UPR projects. Negotiate and manage the approval of license terms and conditions associated with materials from third party IP owners, stock footage/content providers and social media platforms, in coordination with Universal Pictures, DreamWorks Animation, Universal Beijing Resort and Universal Creative team members. Assist with UPR’s management of its third party business relationships, including the interpretation of and compliance with its third party IP license agreements, preparation of contract summaries and best practices guidelines, and drafting of amendments and ancillary documents. In close collaboration with other UPR legal and business affairs team members, advise and coordinate with executives at all levels of seniority as well as outside counsel, as needed, to identify and resolve business and legal issues and provide ongoing advice and support. Work on legal administration matters, including projects involving rights research, intellectual property clearance and infringement enforcement efforts. Should have substantial clearance and licensing experience with film and television productions, and in connection with ancillary exploitations involving theme parks, location-based entertainment (LBE) and live entertainment projects, digital marketing/social media and merchandising. Must have Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience. Should have 5+ years of clearance and licensing work experience with film and television productions and/or theme parks, LBE and live entertainment. Must have excellent legal knowledge and experience analyzing copyright, trademark and personal rights issues. Relevant legal education strongly preferred.
