Senior Attorney The Candidate will be responsible to develop and present flexible, high-level training and guidance materials in emergent legal issues affecting unaccompanied and separated children and their families for use by staff, pro bono attorneys, and partner service providers. Ensure dissemination of timely guidance and case assistance in rapidly changing legal and political landscape, including in the family separation crisis. Provide advanced trainings on asylum law, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, T visas, recent Executive Orders and Attorney General rulings affecting unaccompanied children, and other cutting-edge topics, and assist field staff in developing jurisdiction-specific guidance . Triage referrals for children needing legal services, including referrals for children in ORR or ICE detention facilities and upon release, and facilitate representation. Where needed, provide or oversee KYRs, legal orientations, credible fear interview preparation, communication and/or contact and reunification efforts for separated parents and families. Work closely with staff and colleague organizations to ensure streamlined services to separated children, including locating a separated parent and handling of unforeseen scenarios, such as the rapid movement of separated children and adults between facilities, released locations, and/or removal. Provide hands-on mentorship to legal staff, equipping them to work effectively in providing direct representation or advising pro bono attorneys. Assist in funding deliverables oversight, process mapping, and tracking data and outcomes. In consultation with the Director of Pro Bono Partnerships, support law firms and corporations providing individual case, appellate, and/or amicus work on behalf of separated and unaccompanied children. Facilitate referrals to field offices for children released into a jurisdiction, and coordinate continuing representation for separated children who are released outside of service area where practicable. Facilitate cross-referrals with social services, mental health and medical providers. Participate in coalitions to stay abreast of legal developments to inform cutting-edge expert mentoring of pro bono attorneys, and to ensure rapid dissemination of guidance materials to other providers to benefit separated and unaccompanied children and their families as broadly as possible. Support LST Management and Deputy Director, as needed, with project management tasks, including reporting, and funder and media relations.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have Member of the bar, preferably in the applicable jurisdiction in which you seek to be located (NY or TX) with 5 to 7 years of experience practicing immigration law, which should include representation of clients in humanitarian immigration claims such as asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, U visas and T visa. Experience working with children, preferably immigrant and refugee children, or experience working with survivors of abuse, human trafficking, or other trauma. Experience working with detained immigrants. A strong record of cultural competence and cross-cultural communication skills. Mentoring and training experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent professional judgment. Ability to hit the ground working, multi-task, and work independently. Ability to work collaboratively. Spanish fluency strongly preferred.
