Job Title: Patent Agent
Job Overview:
A prestigious law firm in Chicago, IL, is seeking an experienced Patent Agent to assist in all facets of patent prosecution, application preparation, and patent research. This role will involve direct interaction with clients, minimal oversight by attorneys, and responsibilities for managing patent portfolios. The Patent Agent will also support business transactions and litigation matters while providing training and mentorship to junior IP professionals.
Duties:
- Draft, prepare, and submit patent applications to the USPTO with minimal attorney supervision.
- Review and respond to communications from the USPTO and international patent offices.
- Provide substantive support for patent enforcement, licensing, and business transactions.
- Offer input on patentability, validity, and infringement opinions.
- Conduct detailed patent and literature research using online databases.
- Assist with patent litigation matters and more complex patent research.
- Offer guidance and training to junior staff and IP professionals.
- Manage and develop patent portfolios, ensuring compliance with relevant deadlines and practice group procedures.
- Interact with clients throughout the patent process, ensuring smooth communication and service delivery.
Requirements:
- 4-7 years of experience as a Patent Agent.
- Must have passed the Patent Bar Exam and be registered to practice before the . Patent and Trademark Office.
- Ability to draft and prosecute patent applications with minimal oversight.
- Strong understanding of patent laws, including patentability requirements and relevant case law.
- Advanced research skills, with a demonstrated ability to perform complex literature and patent searches.
- Experience working with clients, including advising on strategic patent matters.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, tailored for technical and legal audiences.
- Experience managing and prioritizing multiple patent cases effectively.
- Familiarity with patent litigation processes.
Education:
