ProfileAdvocacy and Policy Counsel Duties: Monitor, research, and analyze opportunities to advance immigrantsâ€™ rights in states and localities across the country. Draft and analyze legislation. Draft policy analysis designed to effect change by state policymakers. Conduct research on proposed state legislation and policy initiatives. Develop and produce advocacy and public education tools, including reports and briefs. Work with affiliates in setting policy goals and developing strategies to defend and advance immigrantsâ€™ rights. Provide policy support to affiliates. Facilitate intra-organizational working groups oriented around key policy and campaign priorities. Represent in national coalitions and develop relationships with allies and other organizations to further advocacy goals. Collaborate with the administration of grants to affiliates programs. Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance. Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts. Identifying areas for possible litigation is encouraged.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: A JD degree with 7+ years of legal or legislative experience is preferred. Experience working in political, policy, legal, or government settings; familiarity with public policy and legislative processes is preferred. Exceptional ability to conduct legislative analysis and research. Experience with constitutional issues, legislation, and community outreach is preferred. Ability to work independently as well as within a team. Excellent research, writing, analytic, and communication skills. Ability to communicate complex legal issues to the general public. Ability to simultaneously handle multiple tasks, work efficiently and quickly, and meet deadlines under pressure. Strong and demonstrated commitment to civil liberties and social justice issues; expertise in the areas of immigrantsâ€™ rights, racial justice, voting rights, or disability rights preferred. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
