ProfileDirecting Attorney The candidate will provide direct legal services to low income clients in the areas handled by the Family Law Unit. Will handle a case load of family law and guardianship matters. Develop and implement the vision, mission and goals of Center's Family Law Unit. Supervise attorney, paralegal and law student staff members. In coordination with the Executive Director and other senior staff develop and execute strategies, including policy advocacy and impact litigation, to resolve family law problems with a large impact on the community. Serve as a member of Center's leadership team and actively participate in office wide management activities. Work collaboratively with other Center substantive units, as well with other legal services providers, community groups, and government officials. Help develop local, state and federal policies addressing family law issues. Oversee case referrals and provide support to volunteer attorneys and law students. Represent Center at legal networking and community outreach events. Help organize and coordinate family law legal services through clinics and workshops throughout Orange County. Provide training to pro bono attorneys, volunteers, partner organizations and the community as needed. Represent Center at legal networking and community outreach events. Conduct community education presentations to clients, partner agencies, and service providers. Oversee grant management and reporting; assist in the family law grant application process. Occasional evening and weekend work required.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have active membership in the California State Bar. Must have 5+ years of experience in the practice of law primarily handling all aspects of family law matters. Experience in family law is required including experience handling SIJS matters. Knowledge of probate law a strong plus. Demonstrated ability in the development of strategies to resolve complex problems with a broad impact on the community is required. Should have demonstrated commitment working with volunteer lawyers and law students. Experience supervising and helping the professional development of lesser experienced lawyers and/or law students is needed. Strong public speaking skills and ability to train a variety of audiences, from clients to pro bono attorneys, required. Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Vietnamese a strong plus.
