Legal Services Project Staff Attorney
RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide legal assistance to center people in the areas of: immigration; discrimination complaints to local, state, and federal agencies; police misconduct; prison/ jail conditions; and criminal record expungements. Assist with the coordination of legal education strategies, development of educational materials, and organization of community legal clinics. Organize and manage LSP’s pro-bono matching program. Give technical assistance to attorneys on how to provide culturally competent representation center people. Support LSP Manager to oversee volunteer program, including partnerships with law firms and law school programs. Respond to English helpline inquiries with appropriate legal information and resources. Provide immigration-related legal counseling and support for center immigrants.

Qualification and Experience

QUALIFICATIONS: Law degree and 1-3 years’ experience providing direct legal services. Membership in the bar of at least one state, preferably California or New York. Excellent speaking and writing abilities. Demonstrated history of producing the highest caliber legal work. The ability to talk about legal and other complex issues in clear, persuasive terms for non-lawyer audiences. Experience with racial justice, immigrants’ rights, and/or trans justice work, especially community-based. A high level of independence and initiative, creativity, and good judgment. Experience working in teams with people from a variety of racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, educational, religious, sexual, gender, and generational backgrounds. A demonstrated commitment to a broad range of social, racial, and economic justice issues and an understanding of the multiple communities center represents. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE Experience working in an interdisciplinary team. Knowledge about current TGNC immigration legal issues. Experience working collaboratively with grassroots organizations. Experience supervising paralegals or legal volunteers. Fluency in a language other than English.
