Legal Assistant II-III The candidate will drafts, prepares, reviews and edits pleadings, motions, briefs, abstracts, legislative histories, petitions, summary judgments, rules and other administrative and agency procedures; researches and analyzes legal sources such as statutes, case law, administrative records, opinions, land titles, abstracts and rules and regulations; prepares memoranda on research findings; manages attorneys’ case load including scheduling, prioritizing, preparing chronologies, fact summaries, filing, and case management; reviews mail and screens calls for attorneys. Prepares division monthly reports, press reports, appellate reports and National Association of Attorneys General reports; prepares documents; organizes documents in complex litigation; prepares and coordinates service of subpoenas, notices of deposition and other legal documents to witnesses and parties to actions; communicates with state agencies, court personnel or outside entities. Participates in coordinating discovery, including the drafting, responding and calendaring of interrogatories, requests for production, requests for admissions and other information in accordance with local, state, federal and agency rules and procedures; schedules, attends, assists and prepares attorneys for hearings, trials, agency meetings, appellate arguments, depositions, docket calls, administrative hearings or committee meetings; files pleadings with court; reviews citations, quotations, footnotes and references for accuracy; shepardizes cases; maintains calendar/docket, files, case openings and closings; serves as the division’s library liaison and processes year renewals, routing subscriptions, and publications to appropriate division personnel. Assists Division Chief in managing case load including legal research and provides other litigation assistance as needed; assists with coordinating, assembling and preparing evidence, exhibits, affidavits and other documents for use in legal proceedings; assists in all phases of trial preparation, including setting hearings/ depositions/ meetings, ordering medical records, coordinating discovery requests with client agencies, organizing trial notebooks and exhibits and preparing witnesses for trial.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have Graduation from high school or equivalent. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; experience in the following (or closely related) fields may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis: full-time legal assistant, legal secretary, or general office experience is needed. Should have 1 year of experience working in the following (or closely related) fields: legal assistant, legal secretary, or general office experience. Experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary working in a legal assistant capacity is preferred. Experience with financial, securities, contracts or Texas charitable trusts is preferred. Experience using WordPerfect for Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat Professional 11, Summation, Relativity, E-Transcript Viewer, Secureshare is preferred. Experience with computerized legal research is preferred. Experience using database software is preferred. Experience with electronic filing is preferred. Proficient in shepardizing, Westlaw and other related research tools.
