Criminal History Specialist The candidate's duties will include : To review incoming arrest data and retrieve criminal history information using ACCESS, WASIS, SCOMIS, DISCIS, JUVIS, and DOL computer systems on all felony referrals. Interpret complex criminal history information to determine correct names and aliases, offender scores and sentencing ranges of defendants charged with felonies. Accurately calculate sentencing ranges for defendants based on interpretation of criminal history obtained, and prepare appropriate paperwork. Request and/or retrieve certified documentation from local criminal justice agencies and criminal justice agencies throughout the United States and foreign countries to support offender scores and sentencing ranges. Respond to other criminal justice agencies to verify and/or interpret criminal history information relating to prosecution of defendants in other jurisdictions. Research related information and case law to determine accurate offender score and sentencing range, including translation of unlike out-of-state and foreign convictions to comparable Washington convictions. Respond to routine procedural or legal questions from attorneys, staff, outside agencies and others on issues relating to the Sentencing Reform Act. Establish and maintain an accurate criminal history database. Maintain up-to-date reference resources and materials relating to the Sentencing Reform Act. Train other staff and/or attorneys in use of the computer systems, the interpretation of criminal history and in determining offender scores. May perform the duties of a Paralegal.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must have AA degree in an accredited paralegal, legal assistant, criminal justice or related field and 3 years experience in a position, such as a paralegal, with a criminal justice agency or law firm requiring legal research and related job duties. Additional experience may be substituted, year for year, for education. Should have knowledge of: legal terminology; legal research methods and source; federal, state and local court rules and procedures; the Sentencing Reform Act; criminal office procedures; criminal justice system and the overall operations of, and purposes served by the Criminal Division of the Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Should have ability to: accurately analyze and interpret criminal history information from arrest records and other sources; communicate clearly and effectively both in writing and orally; operate word processing equipment, legal research computers and programs and/or communication equipment.
