ProfileStaff Attorney Temporary Duties: Provide representation to elderly clients in city at risk of losing their homes in a variety of cases, including foreclosures, issues involving reverse mortgages, tax sales, tax credits, water and utility bill delinquency, heirs’ property and title issues, financial exploitation and predatory lending. Handle all case work functions from initial intake through representations of clients before agencies and courts. Work with colleagues, law graduates, legal assistants, paralegals, and social workers on cases and projects and maintain files in accordance with Aid standards. Screen clients for eligibility and make appropriate referrals; Receive and prioritize the handling of referrals from project partners and newly established “HUBS” that will provide social work and case management to Baltimore seniors. Ensure that “no wrong door” referral approach is implemented; Conduct substantive client interviews; Perform factual investigation and legal research; Advise and counsel clients; Prepare pleadings, briefs, legal memoranda, correspondence, and other legal documents; Develop case theory and strategy for representation of clients both independently and in consultation with supervisors and unit staff; Represent clients in negotiation/mediation, hearings, trials, and appeals; Serve as point person in collaboration with funding partners and attend meetings to ensure referral process is seamless and required data is shared; Be available to community groups and HUBS to provide outreach and education; Participate in HUBS clinics organized by project partners by providing substantive expertise; Develop professionally through attendance at Aid training, task forces, and other educational opportunities; Assist with reporting and data collection required by the funder; Assist with grant-writing and development efforts; Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the essential functions of the position.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Admitted to practice in the State of Maryland or admitted in another jurisdiction and eligible for admission in the State of Maryland. Out-of-State attorneys must be able and available to take next scheduled Bar examination following date of employment. Experience handling foreclosures and/or bankruptcies is preferable. Must be willing to accept complex and challenging cases and develop creative strategies to assist clients. Spanish language proficiency is desirable.
