Profile

Justice Catalyst Law seeks an Impact Litigation Attorney to litigate impact cases that cross boundaries to pursue social justice. This is an incredible opportunity for a self-directed litigator to work on cutting-edge matters with a team of national experts.

Justice Catalyst Law
Founded in 2016, Justice Catalyst Law is new, lean, and agile. We take on social justice issues that fall between the cracks of traditional advocacy models, connect lawyers and advocates with diverse specialties, and apply a cross-disciplinary, problem-centric approach to the law. For example, in Crain v. Accredited Surety & Bond, we worked with a private firm and other nonprofit organizations to bring an antitrust lawsuit against California bail bonds companies and insurers for fixing bond prices. See the L.A. Times article on this case.

Our other matters involve areas as diverse as worker’s rights, consumer debt, civil rights, foreclosure protection, consumer protection, and prisoners’ rights. This broad range reflects our approach: instead of focusing on enforcing a narrow area of law, we first try to understand the injustice, then build a team that can draw on all of the areas of law necessary to address it, with an eye toward activating underused laws and legal theories.

Responsibilities
Based in Washington, DC, the Impact Litigation Attorney will work closely with our Legal Director and Executive Director to file and litigate class action lawsuits with our diverse network of allies. Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting all aspects of active litigation, including briefings, discovery, and motions practice
  • Finding and forging relationships with key allies
  • Investigating facts, including interviewing potential plaintiffs and witnesses, submitting FOIA requests, reviewing documents, and traveling to conduct on-site investigations
  • Planning high-level legal and litigation strategies
  • Taking the lead on some of Justice Catalyst Law’s pending matters, and
  • Working with our partners, including nonprofits, government enforcers, and plaintiffs’ firms

Qualifications
The Impact Litigation Attorney must have:

  • A J.D. and bar admission to any U.S. jurisdiction
  • Four years’ experience in complex, class action litigation
  • Expert understanding of civil procedure
  • Excellent legal research skills
  • Proven ability to manage the early stages of a class action or impact case
  • Demonstrated passion for social justice
  • A pragmatic, flexible mindset
  • A high tolerance for risk, and
  • An ability to collaborate with a team from diverse professional backgrounds

While not a requirement, expertise in a substantive area of law such as antitrust, consumer law, class practice, mass torts, civil rights, secured transactions, product liability, environmental law, or other areas is a plus. We are confident that an Impact Litigation Attorney with such substantive expertise will be able to employ it as part of our interdisciplinary approach.

Compensation
Excellent benefits. Salary DOE
