ProfileSenior Counsel – Employment Attorney The candidate will provide legal support to the Lab primarily on employment law matters, but may also be called upon to assist with procurement, regulatory and related compliance law issues that can arise in the operation of company. Will report to the General Counsel and is expected to exercise a wide degree of creativity, latitude and independence on matters of substantial complexity and importance, involving a broad range of legal, financial, and factual issues and varied stakeholders. In addition to giving advice and handling matters of importance to the Lab, the Sr. Counsel will solve legal issues that are diverse and multi-faceted in scope with significant impact on Laboratory operations and will participate in Lab-wide policy and process initiatives. Identify and analyze legal issues, draft key documents, present clear recommendations, and assure legal compliance. Research and analyze case law, statutes, and regulations; draft legal guidance. Participate on multi-disciplinary teams. Provide legal advice to management in developing Laboratory policy with guidance from the General Counsel. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Leads and directs the work of others as assigned or necessary. Creates business legal reports and correspondence, and effectively presents information to the General Counsel and/or Lab management. Compiles documentation in response to administrative legal proceedings and litigation matters. Perform other general law assignments as needed.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have Juris Doctor from an accredited law school. Admission to the NYS Bar or eligible to be admitted is needed. Must have 10 years substantive employment law experience with a corporate legal department or a nationally recognized law firm. Demonstrated advanced analytical, communication, and leadership skills are needed. Experience performing legal research and drafting legal guidance is needed. Should have demonstrated ability to participate in, form and lead teams, within the legal department and throughout the organization. Must have experience working with HR Information Systems, payroll, benefits and finance systems and assisting plan administrators with employee benefit plan interpretation and administration. Significant experience drafting and implementing complex settlements, contractual agreements, and employer policy documents is needed. Experience at a DOE laboratory and/or experience providing legal support to an organization that provides goods and services to the U.S. DOE/NNSA is desired.
