Legal Director
The candidate will lead and expand its litigation and legal programs. The Legal Director will be a critical member of the senior leadership team, reporting directly to the Executive Director and providing leadership and coordination of both litigation and non-litigation legal strategies. Will be responsible for helping to set the overall legal strategy to advance the mission of the organization, as well as for the day-to-day management of the legal program, including managing 20 staff attorneys. The Legal Director must bring demonstrated trial experience and a proven ability to develop and implement long-term legal strategies and create solutions to advance civil liberties and civil rights. They will be a member of the Illinois bar (or another state bar and willing to seek admission in Illinois) and will be a member of the trial bar of the US District Court of the Northern District of Illinois (or the trial bar in another US District Court). At least 15 years of legal or equivalent experience is required. The Legal Director will be a collaborative leader who is comfortable managing a senior-level staff of lawyers (trial teams, investigatory teams, and/or task forces). They will bring proven experience supporting goal-setting processes/performance management and establishing professional development opportunities for staff. The Legal Director will navigate competing priorities and resolve staff conflicts with a calm and respectful demeanor, balancing the big-picture, longer-term strategy with urgent needs. The Legal Director is a highly visible spokesperson for the ACLU-IL, speaking regularly to print and broadcast journalists and at public forums, and otherwise advocating for civil rights and civil liberties both in the courts of law and in the court of public opinion. The Legal Director will bring a track record of partnering with a wide range of external stakeholders, such as members, allies, people within impacted communities, and other constituencies. The Legal Director will bring an unwavering commitment to civil rights and civil liberties issues and a deep belief in the equal protection of the law and justice for all people. They will also bring a recognition that effective advocacy uses the most appropriate combination of tools to effect or sustain change – including litigation, legislative, communications, outreach, engagement – and will be committed to working collaboratively with colleagues in other ACLU-IL departments, volunteer attorneys, and the National ACLU to pursue these goals. The next leader will also bring an understanding of the deeply intersectional nature of ACLU’s work and a passion for advancing the diversity, equity, and inclusion work underway at the affiliate.
